ATTORNEY GENERAL
Substitute role x 6 months and/or substantive role on 2-year contract available.

About the role
The Attorney General is the primary legal adviser to the Governor and the governments of Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha and provides wide-ranging expert legal advice. The role is varied, from overseeing all legislative drafting, to managing the legislative program, to being responsible for criminal prosecutions, drafting contracts and other legal instruments. Overseeing the Offices of the Attorney General, the role is responsible for leading and developing the legal and administrative team.

what you gonna do
No day will be the same in this role, and you will perform a wide and varied range of activities assigned to the Attorney General under the Constitution and other laws and policies. You will have overall responsibility for all Crown proceedings, managing the legislative agenda, criminal liability responsibilities, draft legal contracts/agreements and other legal instruments, while ensuring that the Attorney’s Office general grows and adapts to reflect the changing needs of the islands. Other specific responsibilities are outlined in the attached job profile.

What you will bring
You will be a qualified and experienced attorney or barrister (minimum 7 years after qualification) with experience in civil and criminal litigation, including advocacy in superior courts, in both the public and private sectors. In addition to your wide range of experiences, you will bring effective leadership and management skills, as well as demonstrable experience in leading and developing high-performing teams. A high level of communication, analysis, planning, influence and interpersonal skills (including influence, networking and diplomacy) are essential in this role.

What we offer
In addition to a negotiable salary (based on experience and qualifications), the following benefits are offered:

How do we live and work in Saint Helena?
Saint Helena is a small volcanic island in the South Atlantic, part of the British Overseas Territory of Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha, located approximately 1,200 miles from the South African mainland and 800 miles from our nearest neighbor Ascension Island.
