Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu yesterday pleaded with the general public to help his administration by exposing the people who are sabotaging the government’s efforts to clean up the state’s real estate sector.
Sanwo-Olu expressed sorrow over the Ikoyi building collapse that claimed the lives of more than 40 people, but pleaded with the general public to help the government rescue the organizations and individuals who were helping the culprits, so to prevent such an incident from happening again.
He made the advocacy at the second Lagos Real Estate Market Square Conference and Exhibition on Lagos: 21st Century Real Estate Investment Center organized by the Lagos State Real Estate Regulatory Authority (LASRERA) , claimed that some government agents and promoters had cultivated the habit of cutting corners.
The governor expressed disappointment at the activities of some government officials accused of sabotaging government efforts to regulate the real estate sector in the state, saying he would now ensure those officials were kicked out of his government.
The lesson we learn is not lost on us. But I dare say that a month before the Ikoyi building collapse incident, we launched a certificate of completion and a certificate of fitness for habitation of buildings in the state. We had done this with the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA), which means anyone who has done appropriate development at a certain level must get a Certificate of Completion and Certificate of Housing Suitability.
“So these are some of the things that, from a regulatory standpoint, have indeed all been checked. We know that for the size of this town, there will be people who like to cut corners, there will be officers who will also belittle us and reduce our name, we know that. We are not going to stay here and say that everyone who works for us is holy, but we are dealing with them. These are major issues that we all need to work together and address.
I take this opportunity to express my disappointment with some government officials who want to sabotage this effort. I will not only be ruthless, I will seek you out and make sure that you have no place in my government. It is an agency that must work for everyone. It’s a project whose time has come, ”he said.
In her welcome speech, Lagos State Governor Special Advisor on Housing, Ms. Toke Benson –Awoyinka said real estate remains a very strong and powerful investment around the world, adding that in addition to Its role in job creation and sustainable job creation, it has the greatest potential for economic growth of any state and nation. .
She said: “As viable as this industry is economically, having the right information and understanding the operating environment of investors or owned companies is essential and this can be achieved through coaching and conferences. professionals like this.
“It is necessary that we all know what government policies are in place and how knowing all of these policies can help us make informed decisions about our investments.
“As a government we have recognized this fact and as such we have crafted pro-business policies that can help potential investors, corporate issuers operate in a conducive business environment.
“ We all know the havoc and damage caused by the coronavirus epidemic which has brought drastic changes to the world’s financial sector, despite this the real estate sector has remained the preferred investment in the world despite this threat. ”
