Gibraltar delegates with Grenada Ambassador and C24 Chair, Keisha McGuire

Gibraltar Chief Minister Fabian Picardo and Deputy Chief Minister Dr Joseph Garcia met privately with the Chairman of the UN Committee of 24, Ambassador Keisha McGuire (Grenada) at the UN Headquarters United in New York.

The meeting provided a useful opportunity to engage directly with the Committee outside of the formal structure of annual speeches set in meeting rooms, according to the Gibraltar government statement.

“The Government’s objective was to discuss ideas on the way forward for Gibraltar’s greater involvement in the work of the Committee of 24 and to gain a better understanding from the Chairman of the opportunities that may be available for let that happen.

“It’s in line with Gib policy. Government to work more closely with the Committee in the context of the decolonization of Gibraltar and its removal from the United Nations list of Non-Self-Governing Territories”.

This is not the first time that such a meeting has taken place between the Government of Gibraltar, representing the people of the territory, and the current Chairman of the Committee. However, this work was interrupted in 2020 and 2021 due to the pandemic.

Chief Minister Fabian Picardo QC MP said: “It was a pleasure to finally be able to meet C24 Chair Ms McGuire in person in New York and set out in a more relaxed way our key objectives for continuing to engage. . and appear before the Committee. This is a key part of the work that the Deputy Chief Minister and I are carrying out, together with Minister Sir Joe Bossano, to ensure that we promote C24 understanding of the issues affecting the continued push from Gibraltar for our removal from the list of non-self-governing countries.
