Government Law College construction nears completion in Salem

The Government Law College and Kadathur Agraharam Student Hostel here is expected to be inaugurated in the last week of August or the first week of September as the construction work is nearing completion.

The student community and lawyers demanded the opening of a government law school in the district. The then AIADMK government announced the establishment of a law school for the Salem district. In August 2019, former Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami inaugurated a law school which operated from a temporary building in Maniyanoor.

Mr. Palaniswami announced at the event that a permanent building for the law school would be constructed on the Salem-Coimbatore trunk road in Kadathur Agraharam. Construction work on the law school building began in 2020, but work has progressed at a snail’s pace due to the COVID-19 pandemic. After two years, the construction work is coming to an end.

A senior official attached to the Public Works Department (PWD) said 18 acres of land had been chosen for the project and the building was constructed on 2.30 lakh square feet. The total cost of the project was ₹96 crore.

The college has 25 classrooms, a large auditorium, a digital library and a playground. A girls’ hostel was built inside the university campus. The men’s hostel is being built in the village of Sevampalayam, three kilometers from the college.

Work is in progress to ensure the water connection of the buildings. The chief minister is expected to inaugurate the building and hostels in the last week of August or the first week of September, the official said.
