Vice President Leni Robredo expressed her gratitude to economists, retired military personnel, diplomats and former government officials who supported her presidential bid.

On February 11, more than 130 Filipino economists issued a statement expressing their full support for Robredo’s presidential candidacy.

At least seven former secretaries of socio-economic planning and heads of the National Economic Development Authority (Neda) signed the declaration.

“We believe Vice President Leni Robredo is our best hope to reverse the tide and restore people’s trust in government to restore and maintain the vigor of people’s lives and livelihoods as soon as possible.” , the group said.

The group added that Robredo is a trained economist and lawyer who has dedicated herself to legal aid for the poor.

He said the vice president also has “a proven track record of practical leadership and good governance, as evidenced by the effective and responsive programs of the office of the vice president throughout the pandemic.”

The group endorsed the vice president’s Kalayaan sa Covid (Freedom from Covid) plan, describing it as a “coherent and comprehensive” document.

They said the country’s economy can only recover if the government focuses on a systematic response to the pandemic.

Among the former secretaries of socioeconomic planning who signed the endorsement were Solita “Winnie” Collas-Monsod, Emmanuel F. Esguerra, Dante Canlas, Cielito Habito, and Ernesto Pernia, who was Chief Neda during the Duterte administration.

Other signatories to the statement were Marikina representative Stella Quimbo, who holds a Ph.D. graduate and former professor at the University of the Philippines School of Economics and Diwa C. Guinigundo, former deputy governor of the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas.

On February 8, the start of the official campaign period, 47 other retired military personnel, diplomats and career government officials, mostly from the administration of the late President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III, joined their colleagues in support of Robredo. to the presidency.

Earlier this month, nearly a hundred former government officials, career diplomats and four retired military leaders under President Aquino endorsed Robredo’s candidacy.
