$99,827 – $118,135 per year

This Teaching Specialist (Academic) position, with a primary focus on teaching and teaching-related activities, has an important role to play in the University’s achievement of its strategic plan, Making a Difference: l ‘Agenda 2025.

The Lecturer in Government will contribute to excellence in teaching and learning in the full range of government subjects at the College of Business Government and Law, which include public policy, public administration, international relations and comparative politics.

The government lecturer should have expertise in one or more of the following areas:

  • Public policy
  • Governance
  • Public management
  • Social inclusion and gender equality

The Lecturer in Government will be responsible for making independent contributions to teaching and teaching scholarship using innovations in teaching practice and technology to deliver excellence in teaching. Online and blended teaching experience is an asset.

Candidates interested in the fields of digital governance and/or social impact are particularly welcome.

Main responsibilities of the position

This position is primarily concerned with teaching and related duties involving the creation, delivery and continuous improvement of the quality of university education.

It includes (but is not limited to):

  • direct instruction informed by approaches that enhance the student experience;
  • curriculum design and revision; delivery innovation;
  • advances in educational technologies;
  • and provide independent input into maintaining internal and external compliance and course accreditation.

The position is also expected to make an independent contribution to high quality academic, professional and community service. The position does not include research contribution.


  • Create, coordinate and conduct inspiring teaching informed by approaches that enhance the student experience, with a focus on government topics, at all levels and modes, of the College.
  • Contribute to the planning and evaluation of these topics, assuming the role of topic coordinator as required.
  • Make an independent contribution to the review, renewal, development and design of curricula and courses that appeal to existing and new cohorts of students and that foster creativity and critical thinking.
  • To provide support, academic guidance and professional advice to students regarding their studies, professional development and career opportunities.
  • Use innovations and technologies effectively in teaching practice.

Academic, Professional and Service:

  • Participate in College administrative activities such as participation in committees and working groups and attendance at College meetings.
  • Maintain professional knowledge relevant to teaching in their discipline through scholarship and professional development.
  • Engage in activities in a relevant external professional area such as professional associations, conferences and workshops, and in a broader community context at local, national or international level.
  • To provide a high quality contribution to community service on behalf of the College and the University.
  • Undertake activities that foster the development of productive partnerships to provide opportunities for students and promote the employability of graduates.
  • Any other responsibilities related to the level of the position assigned by the Supervisor and/or the University.

Capabilities of the key position

  • Holder of a PhD or equivalent qualification in a relevant field.
  • Demonstrated evidence of making an independent contribution to teaching and teaching scholarship at the discipline level, particularly in one or more of the focus areas described in the position summary (i.e. i.e. public policy, governance, public leadership and social inclusion and gender equality), including participation in subject coordination, curriculum development and teaching methodology at the tertiary.
  • Demonstrated experience or ability to use innovative learning and teaching technologies for face-to-face, online and blended delivery.
  • Demonstrated contribution to leading curriculum reviews and accreditation activities.
  • Demonstrated excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills, including demonstrated ability to build effective relationships with staff, students and industry.
  • Evidence of peer review of teaching and commitment to professional development in teaching.
  • Experience of engagement in a relevant external professional area, including industry partners, and in a broader community context at local, national or international level
  • Consistently high student ratings of teaching with demonstrated improvements
  • Demonstrated evidence of improved student success, including improved retention and initiatives to facilitate employability
  • Proven cross-cultural communication skills, including the ability to liaise with and/or teach international students.
