Texas government officials react to Supreme Court overturning of Roe v. Wade

TYLER, Texas (KLTV) – Texas government officials are reacting to news of the Supreme Court’s overturning of Roe v. Wade.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott released the following statement following the announcement of the court’s decision.

“The United States Supreme Court correctly overruled Roe v. Wade and restored the right of states to protect innocent unborn children. Texas is a pro-life state and we have taken significant steps to protect the sanctity of life. Texas has also prioritized health care support for women and pregnant women in need to give them the resources they need to choose life for their child. I signed laws that extended Medicaid health care coverage to six months postpartum, allocated $345 million for women’s health programs, and invested more than $100 million in our Alternatives to Childbirth program. ‘abortion. This essential program provides counseling, mentorship, care coordination and material assistance, such as car seats, diapers and housing to mothers in need.

Texas will always fight for the unborn innocents, and I will continue to work with the Texas Legislature and all Texans to save every child from the ravages of abortion and help our expectant mothers in need,” Abbott said.

Texas gubernatorial candidate Beto O’Rourke released the statement after the decision.

“The only way to overcome today’s decision is to win this gubernatorial race. The Supreme Court sent this back to the states, and the current governor of our state has banned abortion of conception without exception for rape or incest. If you care about protecting a woman’s freedom to make her own decisions about her own body, health care and future, join this campaign and help us win,” said O’Rourke.

East Texas Senator Bryan Hughes released the statement after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade Friday.

“Today, the Supreme Court of the United States affirmed the constitutional foundation of our nation’s respect for life by finally correcting a decision that has ruled wrongly for nearly 50 years. I commend the Court for refusing to be bullied and deciding the outcome based on the legitimate application of the law rather than fidelity to an anarchic decision,” Hughes said.

“This historic decision marks the end of a terrible chapter in our history. By extending the equal protection of the law to the most innocent, the Court today brings us closer to the true meaning of the American creed. Texas stands with 12 other states with trigger laws already in place to immediately begin saving lives now that Roe v. Wade is canceled. But there is still work to be done.

Texas will continue to lead the way in this post-Roe world. In addition to existing benefits to help mothers and children, we have allocated $100 million just to help pregnant women and adoptive parents. The program offers everything from parenting classes to car seats, and proves that we can save the life of the unborn child while loving, respecting and supporting the mother. We will not forget the 62 million Americans who were denied life before their first breath. With the parody of Roe v. Wade finally on the ash heap of history, more little lives can be saved and more mothers can be helped.

State Representative Matt Schaefer released the following statement after the ruling.

“The Supreme Court decision overturning Roe v. Wade means that in the state of Texas abortion is effectively abolished. In 2021, the Texas Legislature passed HB 1280 which takes effect 30 days after Roe v. Wade is overturned. A physician performing an abortion at any stage of pregnancy will face serious criminal charges and civil liability, the only exceptions being risk of death or serious risk to a major bodily function of the mother. Texas law will define the “unborn child” as an individual living member of the homo sapiens species from fertilization through birth, including all stages of embryonic and fetal development. Texas law does not allow criminal charges against the mother. Additionally, Texas abortion laws that existed before Roe v. Wade and which had been canceled are relevant again. To God be the glory of the laws protecting innocent life in the state of Texas,” he said.

The Texas Republican Party also released a statement welcoming the decision.

Texas Republican Party Chairman Matt Rinaldi said: “Today is a historic day that Republicans and life advocates have waited for a generation. History will remember it as the day the United States of America overturned one of the most unfair, damaging and blatantly incorrect of their history. Fortunately, the left’s blatant attack on our institutions of government has failed and justice has been served. We are also grateful for the work of Representative Giovanni Capriglione, Senator Angela Paxton and the Republican and Democratic lawmakers who passed the law that will now protect the lives of all unborn children in Texas.

“The Republican Party of Texas continues to support facilitating adoptions and assisting mothers in need during and after pregnancy. During the 87th Texas Legislature, funding was significantly increased for the Abortion Alternatives program, which received a total of $100 million for the biennium. This program gives mothers access to resources needed during and after pregnancy. The program helps new mothers and their children by providing items such as diapers, formula, car seats, and pregnancy and parenting classes. Additionally, private non-profit pregnancy centers like choice of birth in Dallas, the trotter’s house in Austin, and Houston Pregnancy Help Center in Houston provide services to help mothers during and after pregnancy.

The Texas Democratic Party also responded after the court ruling.

“Nearly 50 years ago, the Supreme Court upheld in Roe v. Wade the fundamental right to reproductive freedom for all Americans. Today, our worst fear has come true: the Court overturned that decision, ending federal constitutional protection of the right to abortion and threatening the reproductive freedom of millions of Americans.

“No child or adult should be forced to carry a pregnancy to term against their will. By supporting this decision and enacting legislation like the ‘trigger’ law, Greg Abbott and Texas Republicans have made it clear that they are committed to do just that. With the passing of Texas’ six-week abortion ban, these hard-line, far-right conservatives have already made Texas an incredibly dangerous place to live for the millions of people seeking to exercise their previously protected abortion rights. Now Texas has become exponentially more dangerous with the activation of this dystopian and extremist law.

“Nevertheless, we cannot and will not stop fighting. Make no mistake: Texas Democrats will not sit idly by as Republicans threaten the lives and freedoms of millions of Texans.

“Today’s decision is a five-alarm call to action. It is more important than ever that we send real fearless leaders to Washington, ready to fight to codify abortion at the federal level. It’s more important than ever to elect Beto O’Rourke as Governor, overthrow the Texas Legislature, and elect top-down Democrats who will overturn Greg Abbott’s draconian and brutal laws imposing the will of a tiny minority to our entire state.

“We cannot tolerate anything less. Now is the time to get organised, raise our voices and create change. The urgency to protect access to abortion has never been greater; the threat to our livelihoods and freedoms has never been more immediate.

“This November, Texans have a choice: the radical conservatives who run on a platform of anti-freedom, anti-Texan authoritarianism, forced birth and human suffering – or the top-down Democrats who will cushion the shock of today’s national trauma making sure Texans can live without fear of losing the right to their most basic bodily autonomy.

“The choice is clear. The time to act is now,” said Hannah Roe Beck, co-executive director of the Texas Democratic Party.

Gilberto Hinojosa, chairman of the Texas Democratic Party, said he was “angry and concerned about how this will affect the woman of this great country.”

“It was a Supreme Court that made the decision to impose religious and moral values on the people of the United States of America, to ignore any legal precedent, to twist the law to ensure that they essentially do laws that legislate on the bench,” Hinojosa said.

Hinojosa said one thing the United States Congress could do to prevent the abortion trigger laws from coming into effect, which would ban abortion in the states where they are, is that members Congressional Democrats eliminate the filibuster rule. Hinojosa said if that were to happen, there could be a federal law within a week protecting abortion access.

US Congressional candidate and Smith County Judge Nathaniel Moran said he believes the Supreme Court made the right decision in the case.

“Today in this landmark case, the Supreme Court of the United States did the right thing, protected the lives of unborn children and overturned Roe against Wade and I’m really excited about that,” he said. Moran said.
